1. If you could have coffee
with any character from your novels, who would it be and why?
Noah! Is it weird that I kind of have a small crush
on my own character? Yes, it would be Noah. He's strange but in this lovable, alpha male, confident, quiet way. Hands down, my favorite character
I've written so far.
2. At what age did you decide you wanted to pursue a writing career?
I started writing at 21. And even back then I was
pretty serious about it. I'm 29 now. It took me that long to actually publish
(self-publish) anything. I strongly believe if you want to be a writer you can
teach yourself how to write. It just took me nearly a decade to teach myself.
(And I'm still learning.)
3. Do you remember the first book you ever wrote? And if so, what was it about?
The first book I wrote was a young adult paranormal
sci-fi novel called 'Glitch.' It was about Zadie and Demetrious--teenagers with
special powers. Kind of a cross between I Am Number Four and Twilight. I
actually rewrote it about 3 times, trying to get it right, before I gave up on
Young Adult all together. I write New Adult/romance now. But still want to try
to rewrite Glitch one final time and publish it one day.
4. Are you an outliner or a pantser?
Pantser. I don't plot anything out on paper. I do
think of a general starting point and an end point before I start writing. The
rest starts to unfold in my mind as I write.
5. How long did it take you to write He Belongs with Me?
1 year! I'm getting better at writing faster, but I
still write pretty slow. My second novel, Kill Devil Hills, took me 5 months.
So I'm improving.
6. What is your favorite social media site and why?
Instagram! Sadly no one even follows me on there. I
like it best because there is less junk on Instagram than on Facebook. Twitter
is my least favorite.
7. Kill Devil Hills seems so different from He Belongs With Me. Can you give us a quick summary of what each book is about?
Sure.
He Belongs With Me is about twin sisters--Maggie and
Clara. Maggie is the 'good-girl' and Clara is the 'rebellious' one. Both fall
for the same man--the lean, mean, ridiculously sexy and spoiled Leo--at the
same time? It's more of a love square then a love triangle. And it's fun and
light at its core.
Kill Devil Hills is a bit more serious. In the
opening scene, 18-year-old Georgina tries to commit suicide and Noah Clara--her
older sister Ellie's best friend--saves her life. She never wanted to be saved
and he did it anyway. Fast forward four months, Georgie has come home from the
recovery facility her parents sent her away from, and suddenly the dynamic
between Georgina and Noah has changed completely.
8. You seem to have had quite a bit of success with both your novels you’ve released. (Hundreds of reviews on both Goodreads and Amazon) Can you share some tips and tricks for aspiring authors?
For both novels, I ran my own blog tours. I spent
hours contacting bloggers and asking them to review my novel. I planned
everything out as best I could and both times I think my blog tours were very
successful. I'm learning as I go, but marketing is the key to success for
self-published authors. Actually, money wise, I've barely broken even on my
first novel. I've had a little bit more success with book #2, but I still have
a long way to go. I think with each novel I release, my fan base will grow, and
I will have more and more success. Thank goodness my husband supports me or I
could never do this!
9. What would you say has been your biggest accomplishment since you began writing?
Never giving up. I mean, it's nice to have a
finished copy of I book I actually wrote in my hands, but it always seems as
soon as I finish one goal there is another goal out there that I want to reach.
So I keep on keeping on.
10. What gives you inspiration?
My OCD. LOL. I get obsessive about lots of stuff and
having the proper outlet for my obsessions is kind of therapeutic for me. Instead of worry over a million other things, I worry over
my characters and my writing. Thinking through conversations and plotting in my
mind--those are things I'm constantly doing. So I guess my ideas are kind of my
own inspiration. If that makes any sense at all.
